After the load is removed, the material’s surface is examined for the resulting indentation. This mark is measured using a specialized microscope or measuring device, which provides the diameter of the indentation with high precision.


Step 5: Calculating the Brinell Hardness Number (BHN)

The diameter of the indentation is then used to calculate the Brinell Hardness Number (BHN). A standard formula that accounts for the applied load, the ball diameter, and the indentation size is used to determine the BHN. This number represents the hardness of the material and serves as a reliable indicator of its suitability in various applications.
